The Kane County Sheriff's Office Bomb Unit has been on the frontline of
combating all contemporary and improvised explosive devices in the Homeland
since 1970’s.
The Bomb Unit support local, state and federal law enforcement agencies as
well as area fire departments dealing with all contemporary and improvised
explosive devices as well as nuclear, biological and chemical agents. All
certified Bomb Technicians must attend training at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.
The Officer is taught by Military and Civilian (Retired Military) Explosives
Ordinance Disposal Technicians. Upon successful completion, each officer is
certified by the FBI as a bomb technician and meets the standards for Bomb
Technician Certification as defined by the National Bomb Squad Advisory Board.
Furthermore each Bomb Unit goes through an accreditation process and is
accredited by the FBI. Terrorist threats across the country require continuous
training for Bomb Technicians. Training is provided by U.S. Department of
Homeland Security, FBI, ATF, Secret Service and the U.S. Military. The Bomb
Squad also assists with dignitary protection sweeps and high-profile sporting
events which may serve as a target for terrorists upon request from local,
state and federal law enforcement agencies.
The Unit’s equipment includes: robotics, portable x-ray equipment;
total containment vessels, explosive disrupters, and bomb suits that provide
self-contained breathing to the officers as well as protection from both fragmentation
and WMD agents.
